For some researchers, Taraxacum kok-saghyz became an obsession. This plant, known as the Russian dandelion, is indeed the most serious alternative to Hevea brasiliensis, rubber tree, threatened by the spread of a fungus that has infected many plantations in South America and Asia. German researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute of Molecular Biology and Applied Ecology (IME) in Aachen are currently working to manufacture a Russian dandelion GM can produce between 150 and 400 kilograms of latex per hectare per growing season.

The figure seems low, but for researchers, it rhymes with scientific prowess. The EMI is able to identify and disable the enzyme responsible for the rapid coagulation of rubber from dandelion, a property which hitherto banned a large-scale production.Ironically, it was in Germany that the most thorough research on the subject had been made and then stopped, for lack of solution to the problem. At that time, the Germans imported Russian roots and planted in the concentration camps of Auschwitz, where inmates entertained. The issue was already an alternative to rubber for the Army Material.

Nearly 70 years later, the genetically modified plants obtained are capable of making four to five times more rubber with classic Russian dandelions. "The advantage is that the dandelion is grown on large areas. This is an annual plant, which can pick up all year, "says Serge Palu specialist researcher at CIRAD. From there to consider industrial-scale production? "For this, we are still waiting for 2020," cautions the researcher."We must still find the variety that does not clot and produces significantly. More importantly, we must find the extraction process economically profitable.

Allocation of 8,000,000 euros

On this last point that research stumble. As for the guayule, a plant that grows wild in the deserts of northern Mexico, the latex does not flow by incising the bark, but is trapped in the plant cells. A mechanical milling significantly reduced yields. In the 40s, Russian and American researchers had encountered the same problem. With financial support from such giant tires Bridgestone / Firestone, the Emergency Rubber Project USA – a program involving over 1000 scientists, launched by the authorities – was able to provide 2500-3000 tons of guayule rubber by year. But oil and synthetic rubber boom will end these research efforts alternatives.

Today, Brussels is all for bring up to date. A European program called EU Pearls was launched in 2008. With a budget of 8 million euros over four years, it aims to support the research efforts of 11 partners from Holland, Spain, Germany, France, Czech Republic, and the Switzerland.

Halfway through, preliminary results are encouraging. In addition to discovering the dandelion, the researchers came after 21 months of work to get guayule with yields of 900 kg per hectare per annum. It is certainly less than 1500 kg of rubber plantations, but scientists are optimistic.

Emergency

For the EU, it is urgent. The rubber, the basis for more than 40,000 products of everyday life, is under pressure.Since 1 January, prices jumped 160% in Tokyo, the market, from 186 yen per kg (1.65 euro) in July 2009 to 417.10 yen in July 2010 (3.72 euros). Even upward movement on the Singapore market where prices rose 76.89% from $ 1.98 to 3.18 dollars a year.

"Do not forget that there is a public health issue very important that can be expensive to run," adds Serge Palu. Since the onset of AIDS in the 80s, the booming market of the glove and latex condoms has been accompanied by an increase in allergic reactions to this material. "The major advantage of guayule latex from rubber trees is its lower protein content, ten times less for guayule," enthuses CIRAD.In a note published last November, the center's researchers called for "seize on the ball of guayule rubber or Taraxacum kok saghyz as an additional opportunity to release humanity from its dependence on oil" and "compensate for the increase of allergy in the medical field.

An international seminar will bring together researchers on the subject, 14 and Oct. 15, on the site of Agropolis Montpellier.

The defense electronics group Thales has multiplied by eleven net profit in the first half compared to the same period in 2009. It amounted to 138 million euros against 12 million euros last year. The turnover has increased it by 4% to 5.95 billion.

"It's a gradual recovery in line with our expectations in an environment that is becoming," said Luc Vigneron, CEO of Thales. France and Great Britain, where Thales is firmly established, and Germany are considering a reduction in their defense budgets. Faced with this gives the group confirms its commitment to expand internationally. "We are continuing our campaign to improve our performance and want to take advantage of growth areas in emerging countries," said Luc Vigneron.

The group confirmed its 2010 targets. The sales will be stable, the operating profit margin would be 3 to 4%."An operating profit of 3 to 4% corresponds to a net positive for the group," said Patrick Durand, CFO. Thales has a loss in 2009.

Two contracts uncertain

While the group has already Saffron rebound airline, Thales will benefit later recovery of the aviation sector. It is possible that the group is obliged to take further charges for two contracts, "the situation is still somewhat uncertain": Meltem contract signed in July 2003 with Turkey on the one hand, the contract signed in July 2004 for the military transport plane A400M ordered by seven NATO countries (Germany, France, Spain, United Kingdom, Turkey, Belgium, Luxembourg), on the other. "Discussions are under way with Airbus business," said Luc Vigneron. The President of Thales said that the group has been in question had also been penalized by delays to the A400M.

Thales, which has won three contracts in excess of 100 million euros in the first half of 2010 against nine for the same period in 2009, expected completion in the second half of the supply of 81 satellites in the Iridium group. A contract of one billion euros.

Saffron is still determined to seize Zodiac

Saffron is always seize Zodiac. Jean-Paul Herteman, Chief Executive of the group of aerospace and defense, confirmed Wednesday that a rapprochement with Zodiac absolve synergies. "We make time to convince," said Jean-Paul Herteman. The battle is difficult. The supervisory board of Zodiac refused unanimously on July 11 a merger offer.Didier and Olivier Domange Zarrouati, respectively Chairman of the supervisory board and chief executive, believe that Zodiac may develop "not lean Safran or anyone else."

Optimistic after the publication of its first half results, Safran has also raised its annual forecast. It expects an operating margin of 8% against 7% previously. It provides a turnover close to that of 2009. "The performance in the first half lead us to revise our ambitions higher," said Jean-Paul Herteman. The group made a net profit of 223 million euros in the first half, down 20.6%.

1.1 million people are now receiving personalized Autonomy Allowance (APA). This figure gives an idea of the number of elderly dependents currently in France, knowing that all or most currently receive this state aid. To facilitate this transition to an often grueling medical management, the Hospital Federation of France (FHF) was launched in early July, a site whose purpose is to brush this rocky road administration and finance.

"We made the observation that there was no comprehensive information on the care of dependent persons, the diagnosis of dependence on the choice of suitable retirement home," says one hospital to the Federation France. To fill this gap has been launched in early July retraite.fr-houses (not to be confused with home-from-retraite.fr), which includes a multitude of basic information for relatives: a guide for assessing the frail elderly, the coordinates of organizations to contact, a directory of nursing homes classified by criteria, advice for making the administrative processes and be supported financially … Useful information if we know that the average cost of investing in retirement homes reached € 2,200 per month in 2009, according to a barometer carried out by TNS Sofres. A sum that 76% of French people declared so they can not afford.

Qualitative criteria

The directory of retirement homes also facilitates the search for a facility nearby, through a system of records updated regularly paydayloans. Each sheet contains qualitative information on the nursing home concerned. In addition to practical information (address, price) are shown including the number of patients per carer – as a guide, only a ratio of 0.6 health workers per resident is regarded as representing a framework of quality – the degree of dependency supported, comfort criteria, the presence or absence of a psychiatrist or a therapist ….It is even possible to select only those institutions that have spaces available immediately.

Two caveats, however: the book contains only the first public nursing homes, which currently represent 60% of French institutions, among the most medicalised. Then there is still no official criteria for certifying the quality of a retirement home, and who would perform in the rankings. "These indicators are being developed," says Hospital Federation of France. An urgent given the increasing numbers of elderly and dependent. While more than 75 years represent 8.8% of the population today, that proportion should rise to 15% in 2015.

While experts from the European Union (EU) and International Monetary Fund (IMF) are in Athens to verify accounts of the Greek state and the status of the austerity plan, the Paris stock exchange continues the momentum of last week, where the CAC 40 had returned upward, three consecutive sessions, breaking a cycle initiated since April 16 last and prevented systematically aligning more than two consecutive increases. The CAC 40 in advance of 0.79% to 3583 points at the opening and exceeds the threshold of 3600 points. Although nothing is played, far from it. But in recent days, the indices seem more determined to resume the upward path. Trading volumes, including the Paris Bourse, were provided over the last week. The CAC 40 climbed beyond 3,600 points, a course that is almost a record a month. At midday, the index feature of the Paris Stock Exchange gained 1.46% to end at 3607.30 points.

The start of the week is very quiet with a single statistic, Europe, the industrial production of the Euro Area in April. The agenda will be fleshed out, however, more tomorrow, with a range of indicators on the U.S. real estate, consumption and inflation. The speech of Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke on Wednesday, will also be very influential.

Early June is synonymous with decline on Asian financial centers. On Wednesday, all indices of the region are pointing downward. Investors were not reassured by Wall Street, which yesterday closed at a net decline of 1.14%. After a weekend of three days in the U.S., the markets awaited him the reopening of the U.S. stock market to find direction. This only adds to their concerns.

Similarly, all European financial markets plunged, hit by renewed concern about the state of the global economy. Sealed by the bank, the European stock exchange experienced a very volatile session.

Resignation Japan

In Japan, the Nikkei index opened on a decline of 1.11% and then will start in mid-session with the eagerly awaited announcement of the resignation of Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama center-left.The members of his own Democratic Party (DPJ) had repeatedly called for the resignation of a political leader to revive their chances of winning Senate elections scheduled for July 11. The popularity of the democratic leader, whose voters had doubts about the ability to govern, had indeed collapsed since his arrival to the business eight months ago.

"To revitalize our Party, we must make room quite clear to the Democratic Party. I ask for your cooperation, "said Hatoyama, fourth Prime Minister to leave office after less than a year in Japan.

The Nikkei jumped before exiting in the red

This announcement has benefited the Tokyo Stock Exchange rebounded 0.4%. But the rise was short lived.A few minutes later, the Nikkei fell 0.72% to 9,641 points as investors worried that instability and its impact on economic policy.

"Hatoyama's resignation could lead to delays in the planned announcement this month of the growth strategy and the government's fiscal targets. Whoever will replace Hatoyama work before the Senate elections, to disappoint the voters, "noted Hirotaka Kusabi, economist at Mizuho Research Institute.

The rest of the region follows

In China, investors are still trying to digest the bad news fell yesterday on rising inflation in the country (2.8%) and housing prices (+12.8%). This situation raised fears a bubble whose consequences are more serious than the subprime crisis, observers said.Midway, stock markets in Hong Kong and Shanghai respectively coward 0.36% and 1.60%.

Elsewhere, the same concerns: The Kosdaq Korean (-1.08%), the S & P Australia (-0.37%) down.

Only the Bombay Stock Exchange is in the green, showing an increase of 0.49%.

The case Goldman Sachs has taken the weekend of 24 and 25 April, a new political era with the publication by the U.S. Senate emails embarrassing for the bank, accused of having enriched in 2007 by betting on reduction of financial products that the bank had itself sometimes sold to its customers.

Larry Summers, the Obama economic adviser, declined Sunday to comment on the case Goldman Sachs, except to state: "This highlights what is at the heart of the president's vision (in the reform of finance) : the importance of transparency. "

Shocked that unpacking before the opening of public hearings Monday in Congress, Goldman Sachs categorically denies having violated the law.It maintains its role as an intermediary to serve institutional clients with differing views on the trend of the real estate market forced her to speculate for a fall on some securities to cover its risks also taken on other positions.

If they prove nothing of fraudulent e-mails made public Saturday by the Senate show that the bank on Wall Street reveled during the crisis, earn so much money, thanks to its derivatives betting on the fall of subprime housing market, while its own customers – including European banks – in poorer inverse operations.

"We will make a big pile of money!"

In July 2007, David Viniar, chief financial officer of Goldman Sachs, learning that the bank had already won $ 51 million by betting on falling subprime reacted in an email: "It gives an idea of what might happen to those who not a big short position. "

In October 2007, while the housing market plunge, a trader from the bank sent an email to his colleague: "It seems we will make a big pile of money!" The answer: "Yes, we are well positioned … In 2007, the bank led by Lloyd Blankfein has achieved record profits of 11.6 billion dollars that enabled him to pocket a bonus record of $ 67.9 million.During the same period, rival banks, including Morgan Stanley, suffered massive devaluation of their assets.

On Monday, Lloyd Blankfein and six of his colleagues were summoned to explain himself before the Senate subcommittee charged with investigating the financial crisis. Among them, Fabrice Tourre, a French 31 years, accused of fraud by the SEC, the gendarme of the U.S. financial markets. There is theoretically no link between the two investigations. But they are on the same subject: conflicts of interest of Goldman Sachs derivatives markets of mortgages. An email signed by Fabrice Tourre in 2007 shows his pessimism about the products he elaborated: "This market is completely dead and the poor little subprime borrowers will not be long." Fabrice Tourre will even be compared to Frankenstein for creating products that will turn against their owners, by precipitating the collapse of the U.S. housing bubble and the global financial crisis.

At Carrefour, the social climate is far from rosy. Dissatisfied with the management proposals as part of mandatory annual negotiations (NAO), the French unions of the retail giant called for the stoppage of work Saturday, the day of attendance in the group's stores.

In addition to a proposed overall increase of 1% of wages to be too thin, the negotiations foundered on the granting of a premium absenteeism desired by management. At a cost of 100 euros gross per annum, that would be assigned as a collective case of lower rates of absenteeism, store by store. In a supermarket whose average absentee rate is 10% – which is very high – for example, employees would receive the bonus if they manage to bring down the rate of 0.65% minimum. This device causes for the moment the ire of unions, which fear that employees absent from becoming the target of retaliation by their colleagues present.

"The absent?ime is an indicator of stress"

"We are opposed to such stigmatization of employees absent" outraged the CFDT delegate Sauzeau Christopher, who believes that management avoids asking the questions of substance. "Absenteeism is primarily an indicator of stress suffered by employees" says he, regretting the 5,000 jobs it eliminated by Carrefour in 2009. A visibly perceived hostility by management, that could change his tune. The human resources director of Carrefour, Jean-Luc Masset, said it had "saved the union position, and would think about."The progress of negotiations and new proposals likely to depend on the mobilization of employees on Saturday" predicted Christopher Sauzeau. If employees did not get satisfaction, a day of action on a larger scale could take place next April 30, the eve of Labor Day.
